kids and babies

the other day the boys had friends over playing in our yard. while standing ready to push swings upon request one of our little visitors started talking to me about his baby sister. he told me all about how funny she is and i laughed along. i love hearing little people talk about their siblings. i think it's adorable and sweet. then there was a moment of silence and he asked me, "where's your baby?" i pointed over to the sandbox where garrett was throwing sand up in his hair and replied, "garrett is my baby." another moment of silence and then an observation, "but your baby looks a lot like a kid."

i chuckled and told him, "you know what, you're right."

and he was. my baby isn't really a baby anymore.

How often do I introduce 12-year-old Dylan as "my baby," only to hear him indignantly deny it. "Mom, I am not a baby!" And yet he always will be!
